Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Bioinformatics - Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBB)

£37,012 to £44,166/£46,846 to £52,706 per annum

Be in at the beginning of this exciting collaborative bioinformatics venture.

Ref: UOS006630

About the role

This is your chance to drive the development of our exciting new Bioinformatics Hub as you contribute fully as a researcher, teacher, and leader to MBB. We’ll look to this post to conduct, publish, write up, and present personal research, including preparing research proposals for funding bodies, while supervising and empowering postgraduate research students in their own research. Alongside developing the research work of the new interdepartmental Bioinformatics Hub, the successful applicant will have a key role in designing and delivering teaching programmes that complements our already excellent strengths in biological teaching.

The successful candidate will come to us with extensive experience of developing new statistical tools and software to analyse large data sets, especially in relation to deep sequencing. This will be matched by a proven track record of publishing high quality papers in international journals on mathematical processing of large datasets, and a keen interest in working side-by-side molecular biologists.

Oncology Research Fellow in Cancer Bioinformatics

£37,382 to £47,314 per annum - fixed-term contract for 3 years

Ref: UOS006631

Make great strides in cancer sample analysis.

About the role

This key role within our Bioinformatics Hub and the Sheffield Cancer Research Centre will greatly increase the capacity for cancer research and diagnostics based on high throughput data analysis. This is an opportunity to benefit from our excellent technical support and infrastructure and interaction with other bioinformaticians, in both the NHS and academia, and to develop grant proposals and build a strong cancer bioinformatics team. A particular aim for this role is to develop tools for the analysis of patient samples in a way that combines data from multiple platforms.

The successful candidate will be a well-respected researcher with expert knowledge of bioinformatics pipelines and genomics tools, including next-generation sequencing applications. They will have excellent programming skills, a good track record of publications, and a PhD in a relevant subject, such as biology, mathematics, or computer science. We're looking for an excellent communicator, skilled at working with people from academic and non-academic backgrounds, with the ambition, organisation skills, and creative approach to make real breakthroughs in tumour sample analysis.

Lecturer in Bioinformatics – Department of Animal and Plant Sciences (APS)

£37,382 - £44,607 per annum

Ref: UOS006629

Break new ground in bioinformatics in this vital teaching role.

About the role

We need a talented genome biologist who complements our current strengths to take on this key role within both APS and the Bioinformatics Hub. The successful applicant will use their expertise to help take down the barriers to data production in diagnostic and basic molecular biosciences in a wide variety of disciplines and put the explosion of data from processes such as imaging and sequencing to good use. This exciting role will involve undertaking personal research, sourcing independent funding, designing and teaching on a range of programmes, and acting as a personal tutor for a group of students.

The successful candidate will bring a strong track record in genome assembly and analysis, environmental epigenomics, or using genomic data to test evolutionary or mechanistic hypotheses. We would also like to hear from computational or statistical biologists with a strong interest in creating computational or analytical tools, such as new algorithms or statistical methods, for wider community use. All this will be complemented by experience of teaching, supporting, and motivating undergraduates and a significant body of research published in high quality publications.
