The method called
Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates, born in Germany in 1880.
Pilates` childhood was marked by his weak and unhealthy mood, which
made him persistently compensate his handicaps with the study of the body,
its strenghtening and training.
As a result of his
perseverance, Joseph Pilates became a great sportman, hired by
Scotland Yard to be in charge of the training method for the personal
defense of his agents.
Later, Hitler wanted him
to trained the German army before XXII, but Pilates emigrated to the
United States, where he kept developing his method, creating his own
training center.
Pilates
method is about a technique created more
than 80 years ago, but that reappeared in the last decade, when it was used
by renowned sportmen and famous people from the dance, movies and music
world (Jodie Foster, Madonna, Julia Roberts, Sylvester Stallone, Demi Moore,
among others).
Through the gathering of
training concepts brought both from the west and the east, the Pilates
method is based on six principles: contentration, control,
centralization, fluity, precision and breathing.
In
practice, the Pilates method uses a series of appliances specifically
designed for this method, that reinforce some muscles more than others, although
most of the body is used in each exercise, contrary to the culturalist methods
of isolated muscle groups development.
Besides, the environment in
which the Pilates method should be developed, instead of being the
typical roaring gym, with music and noise, must be relaxed, in order to try and
find a balance and armony between body and soul. Because of that, the Pilates
method has sometimes been labeled as the West Yoga.
The Pilates method can
be applied by everyone, since it brings along several benefits according to
everyone`s needs. So, from athletes to dancers, to people who follow physical
rehab programmes for some kind of injury or people who are far from the sport
world and need some type of physical training, all of them can perform the
Pilates method, as long as they are guided by a Pilates instructor
who is an expert in this method.
A lot has also been said
about the benefits that Pilates method brings along as regards
osteoporosis prevention, which is a very important issue among women after
menopause.
Difficulties in the
application of Pilates method generally lie in finding an appropriate
center in order to spread such method, since they are not available in all
cities. That is why, currently, there is a tendency to learn the Pilates
method individually through a DVD.
