Como su nombre indica la anticoncepción de emergencia, no es un método anticonceptivo de uso regular, sus estrictas indicaciones (administración postcoital en, relaciones sexuales no protegidas incluyendo la violación), hacen de ella un método eficaz para evitar embarazos no planificados sin efectos colaterales graves, y con la contraindicación de un embarazo confirmada. Sin embargo es importante señalar que no existen riesgos para la salud de la madre o el niño en caso de tomar las píldoras para anticoncepción de emergencia durante un embarazo inicial.

La efectividad anticonceptiva de las píldoras de anticoncepción de emergencia, no es tan alta como la de los demás métodos de uso regular.

Los efectos colaterales de la anticoncepción de emergencia, se hacen más intensos y frecuentes, así como su uso repetido durante el mismo ciclo menstrual provoca posibles trastornos inducidos del sangrado que dificultarían el reconocimiento de las fases del ciclo. La ausencia de contraindicaciones no es aplicable al uso repetido del método, que resulta casi inocuo si se utiliza ocasionalmente, pero se comporta como cualquier otro tratamiento hormonal si se aumenta la frecuencia de su uso. No protege contra ningún tipo enfermedad de transmisión sexual, por lo que no podrá sustituirse por el condón.
